NDOR began an Innovation Challenge effort to encourage employees to submit innovative ideas big and small. The Innovation of the Year award features a $500 prize and is voted on by NDOR employees.
Constant communication keeps employees informed and motivated to innovate. This means communicating stories about innovation continuously across all channels with a steady drumbeat of new content and regular reinforcement of the key concepts embedded in empowerment!
Give innovation a brand in your agency. Branding is a practice used to establish simple visual and word cues (a logo, a name and a tag line) that become shorthand for a host of innovation activities and help embed awareness in employees.
Short video clips are an easy and effective way to ensure employees see innovation successes – large or small – regularly celebrated, which helps boost motivation, and also acts as informal ‘training’ in what innovation looks like. Videos can be hosted on a YouTube channel and displayed prominently on the landing page of a DOT’s internal website.
Develop a regular print/digital letter that gets the word out about innovation. A large proportion of employees in many DOTs are not regularly at their desks checking the web, so print still has a place.
Innovation can spur great gains in credibility with elected officials who oversee a DOT, so find ways to take innovation successes to audiences of elected officials. (ITD)
Get innovations shared by holding annual fairs where participants get to learn about new innovations that they can take home and implement. For the last several years, individual Caltrans districts have organized their own annual innovation fairs at which innovations the District has undertaken to address a wide range of issues including safety improvements, congestion reduction, efficient project delivery acceleration, higher quality requiring less maintenance, carbon footprint reduction and response to climate change are shared and highlighted.
